Slices of the Sun- Canvas

This painting feels really personal to me. Growing up my mom would sit all of us down in the summer and peel oranges for me and my siblings, one by one, handing them to us fresh. It was simple but it felt like everything in that moment. The smell, the warmth, the way the juice would get on your hands, it’s something that stayed with me.




I wanted this piece to feel like that. Close, warm, and full. Like you are right there in it instead of just looking at it. The colors are rich and layered because that’s how I remember it, not flat or perfect, but alive. I kept the brushstrokes visible so it still feels real and a little messy, like peeling an orange and not caring about the juice running everywhere.




A lot of my work is about finding beauty in things we grew up with, especially as an Arab. Things that feel normal to us but hold so much meaning. This is one of those pieces for me. It is just oranges, but it is also home.
