This piece is called My Mother’s Table because growing up, the table was never just about food. It was where different cultures, stories, and people could exist together at once. Everybody was welcome. It didn’t matter where you came from, what language you spoke, or what your background was. I wanted this painting to feel the same way,  warm, crowded, comforting, and alive.

Every object in this piece represents a different culture or community. The hibiscus tea and flowers represent Sudan, the jasmine flowers represent South Asia and the Middle East, the dream catcher honors Indigenous culture, the hummus and olives represent Arab homes, and the monarch butterfly symbolizes Mexico and migration. The fruit, tea glasses, citrus, and flowers all come together like a shared table filled with pieces of different homes and traditions existing side by side.

I intentionally painted everything overlapping and close together because I didn’t want the cultures in the piece to feel separated from one another. I wanted it to feel united like one table where everyone belongs. The bright colors and loose brushstrokes were meant to make the painting feel full of warmth, conversation, memory, and comfort, like being surrounded by people who may all come from different places but still somehow feel like family.
